Chapter 27
Long Synopsis

It is a date with destiny that will forever be etched on the tragic history of music. On December 8, 1980, loner Mark Chapman shot John Lennon five times outside The Dakota, the New York apartment Lennon shared with wife Yoko Ono and son Sean.
Why did he do it? What compelled this apparently normal married man to assassinate a music legend and icon of the sixties peace and love movement?
In the weekend leading up to the inevitable tragedy, Chapman’s deteriorating mental state succumbs to exaggerated fantasies about his own mundane life and his increasingly strange behaviour alienates fans assembled outside The Dakota.
But it is his attachment to the classic novel “The Catcher in the Rye” that finally causes him to lose his grip on reality and carry out the infamous murder that continues to shock the world.

Short Synopsis

New York City. December 1980. Mark Chapman arrives in New York with the intent to kill John Lennon. A depressed and unstable soul, Chapman is torn between his love and awe for John Lennon’s persona and his desire to kill Lennon in order to gain notoriety for himself. The story portrays Chapman’s mental collapse, which is played out through his obsession with JD Salinger’s classic novel ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, as Chapman’s demons win over, and persuade him to shoot Lennon on the steps of Lennon’s apartment building, The Dakota.

Director’s Note

The music of John Lennon and the writing of J.D. Salinger have always had
a powerful effect on me. They both relate complexities like the pain of love or the confusion of growing up with such openness and accuracy that I  recognize it in myself and feel less alone. They were, and still are, close friends and guides. I imagine I am not the only one. I could never understand how someone who listened to these same songs and read these same books would also want to kill. This film is about that person.

Known for his intense and intelligent performances, Jared Leto’s big screen presence was established in his compelling portrayal of a delusional heroin addict in Darren Aronofsky’s dark drama Requiem for a Dream, starring opposite Jennifer Connelly and Ellen Burstyn.

Last seen in Andrew Niccol’s Lord of War opposite Nicholas Cage and Ethan Hawke, Leto recently wrapped production on Jarrett Schaefer’s Chapter 27, where he stars as Mark David Chapman, the man who murdered John Lennon. He also stars in the romantic thriller Lonely Hearts alongside Salma Hayek for director Todd Robinson.
Additional credits include Oliver Stone’s classic epic, Alexander, with Colin Farrell, Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer; David Fincher’s Panic Room starring with Jodie Foster and Forrest Whitaker; Girl Interrupted opposite Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie and Brittany Murphy; Fight Club co-starring Ed Norton and Brad Pitt; Terrence Malick’s ensemble World War II action-drama, The Thin Red Line; and Prefontaine – a docudrama that chronicles the tragic life of Steve Prefontaine, an Olympic hopeful in long-distance running. He starred opposite Ed O’Neill in this acclaimed film.

Leto’s television credits include his notorious role as ‘Jordan Catalano,’ the high school heartthrob, in the critically acclaimed realistic teen drama series, My So Called Life. Leto also is the front man for his band, 30 Seconds to Mars. He is currently on tour for the 2005 release of their second album A Beautiful Life.

LINDSAY LOHAN

To rave reviews, she later starred, along with Jamie Lee Curtis, in Freaky Friday and Tina Fey’s cult-hit Mean Girls. Lindsay recently completed production on the dark comedy Georgia Rule, directed by Garry Marshall, in which she will star opposite Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman. This past year, Lindsay has been hitting the Indy-circuit starting with a performance in Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion, in which she played Meryl Streep’s troubled daughter. For her performance in Bobby, Lindsay won the “Hollywood Breakthrough Actress” award at the Hollywood Film Festival in October of 2006. Also in 2006, she won the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for “Favorite Female Movie Actress.” In 2004 Lindsay’s performance in Mean Girls garnered her an MTV Movie award for “Female Breakout Out Star.” The same year, she received Teen Choice awards for “Choice Movie Actress,” as well as “Choice Breakout Movie Star.”
In addition to her acting work, Lindsay followed her music aspirations to Casablanca/Universal Records, which produced her debut album titled, “Speak,” as well as her most recent album “A Little More Personal (Raw).”

ok. first off....its important to look at the failures of humanity, other than just the successes. Jared Leto practically killed himself for this movie, hes not a cocky, arrogant jerk-off as you would say..and actually, no that picture doesnt make me sick to my stomach. want to no y? because hes only acting, and you make it seem like Jared, himself would have pointed a gun at Lennon. yeah right...good luck seeing that ever happen...have u ever even met the man? Didnt think so. so how would u be able to say things about him without even knowing him. and just because your mad about this movie...you decide to put the blame on Jared. One point you make in your argument is that this movie would make Mark David Chapman famous, as he wanted..well dont you think that we arent going to make him famous in a good way? wont a movie like this, documenting his insanity in the days leading up to killing John Lennon, wouldnt that just make every single person in the world, hate him? so why do you think he would want the type of fame when he walks out the front door and everyone gives him dirty looks. i dont think thats what he would ever want. And besides, I dont see you boycotting the movie World Trade Center. now wouldnt that give the terrorists fame also? but of course, it would be fame yes, but not for good reason..and everyone would hate them...like Chapman. Its important to watch this movie and understand what happened, not just listen to the fact that Champman murdered Lennon, but about why he did it, and further information like that. so again...please tell everyone exactly why you are boycotting Chapter 27 in the first place...ooo and by the way..this movie is SUPPOSED to be contreversial..there are supposed to be disagreements. thats what the movie was meant for...so please again, remind me why you dislke the Chapter 27 movie.. cuz honestly,..i cant really figure it out..and it seems to me that you have a hate for Jared Leto..is that your only reason? so in turn, your a JERK-OFF so jeez go get a life...instead of wasting your fucking time boycotting a fucking movie..seriously do you not have anything better to do? and me, telling you that this is stupid..to answer your question...no i dont have anything better to do then tell you your an asshole and post this comment..

Or could it be that we don't want actors encouraging psychopaths to murder famous people to steal fame for themselves??

Are you people kidding me...your defending someone who killed John Lennon to be famous, now your beloved Jared Leto is giving him the vehicle to obtain his dream.

Peace...retards

"What is the name of the person who killed John Lennon? Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono made a simple request to John Lennon's fans. Never repeat the name of his killer. Doing so would only give his killer the fame and notoriety he was seeking. Help us stop Peace Arch Entertainment and Chapter 27, a film that humanizes the killer of a peaceful man and Beatle great."

this was quoted by your site!!! "... made a simple request to John Lennon's fans." how many times have you repeated this man's name on your various websites, etc...?? his loyal fans?? i'm sorry to say that you are giving his killer more notoriety than this film ever would have. how you cannot see that is beyond me. it is also important to remember what lennon stood for, as you keep reminding us... peace, correct?? do you think that he would approve of what all of you are doing?? no. this is not peaceful - in any way, shape, or form - it vengeful and it is not doing anyone any good. lennon would likely prefer that all of you were putting your time and energy into doing something about peace today, i.e. the iraq war... something that would make a "real" difference in this crazy, screwed up world. people are being murdered every single day. do you give a crap about them??

your vicious blogs back and forth are far from peaceful. practice what you preach. you are so busy bitching about the actors in this movie, it is pathetic. that is so irrelevant. though, i have to say that the moron who accused another blog poster of being gay and in love with lennon because he defended the film and jared leto has got to be one of the most ignorant morons in history. that is such an ignorant to say, it’s ridiculous. is that all you could come with??

lennon would not have been pleased and flattered by all of your actions. he believed in freedom of speech, not censorship. he wouldn't be flattered by all of you fanatical boycotters, i am sorry to say. just think about that, for a moment. it seems that his so called fans - i am one myself, though not losing my shit like half of you are - don’t seem to get who he was at all. you are not respecting who he was any more than the people who are part of the film. just because people have different viewpoints than you do doesn't mean they are defending a murderer or the actors, etc... again, freedom of speech. do what lennon would have wanted. stop this crusade already.

one last thing... chapman did not kill simply to become famous. he was insane. he lost all sense of reality. i am not defending his actions, but sane human beings do not go out and kill solely for the purpose of fame. are all of you that naive and ignorant?? you sound so fanatical, i fear that one of you might go out and try to kill someone associated with this film. what irony that would be. but, the fact of the matter is that all of this is irony.

Its a movie...Its a story... get over it... John Lennon wasnt some saint, he never actually did anything... just wrote a few songs and advocated a lot of drug use. And Yoko would be behind the movie if only she was getting some $$ out of it.

This has to be the most transparent website ever.

This site is nothing more than a phony contrivance to generate phony controversy. Anyone who actually thinks this site exists to really protest the movie is falling for one of the oldest publicity gags ever created.

I would not mind if it were done more cleverly but it is lazy and badly done. Maybe if they had not cast Lohan in the movie they would have had a better chance at being taken seriously and would not need phony controversy.
