History teached us that trying to wipe out someone's name only makes people even more curious about the matter.
I don't see why Mark David Chapman deserves all the fuss. Scandalizing the name even more will only get people, especially young ones that are still easily impressed, interested. It will end with teenagers tying to be COOL mentioning the "forbidden name".
That contributes to his "fame" and blurr events even more than just showing plainly what happened.
Did anyone ask Spielberg, if it was ok to profit from WWII when he made Schindler's list?
Okay, the comment above loses all merit within the first three words.
"History teached us". Perhaps history has taught us things, but your grammar/spelling teacher needed some work...
That aside, it's not about kids thinking they'll be cool mentioning the forbidden name. Since Ono and company came out and asked for people to not speak it, I have never run into anyone-- young or old-- that purposefully defies that in order to "look COOL". That's ridiculous. It's about giving respect to the people who were directly involved in John's life. For God's sake, Sean finds this film tacky and wishes it wasn't made-- and the director has the gonads to INVOLVE HIM as a TODDLER in the film?? That's rich... or he's trying to BE so, making this flick.
In response to your Spielberg/WWII reference, I'd like to point out the HUGE, GLARING difference between Chapter 27 and Schindler's List.
When it comes to the holocaust, the Jewish community promotes ANY sort of media, news, etc. to continue teaching the story of what had happened. They want to be sure future generations do not forget the huge tragedy that occurred. As for the movie itself, the fact that the survivors depicted in the film-- those rescued by Schindler-- APPEAR AS THEMSELVES in the film at the very end, visiting Schindler's grave in tribute. So YES, I'm sure Steven got permission to use their names and stories to promote education and insight to the terrible but heroic events.
Putting aside the argument that it's kind of disgusting to compare the Holocaust to Lennon's demise (I may love the man, but the two situations are incomparable), what have the reactions of those involved with John and HIS life been? They do NOT want this film to be made, they have ASKED this film not to be made, and yet it was made. Yoko Ono, who had watched her husband get shot in cold blood with her own eyes should NOT be subjected to having a film crew in front of her home--WHERE JOHN WAS SHOT, filming that very scene, or various OTHER scenes. That would be like if your mother was murdered, some jerk filmmaker went to make a movie about it no matter how much it hurt you, and then had the audacity to be outside your home, filming about it. It's complete and total disrespect.
All in all, your argument means nothing. It really doesn't; this isn't about censorship, this isn't about Lennon's killer being some sort of 'Pandora's Box' that every teenager is going to open in defiance. It's about stopping the terrible hurt that Lennon's family and friends have had to deal with in the real life events that occurred; they don't need something as crass and blatant as a film to remind them of it.
